Arsonist Strikes Vermont Tire Company in South Los Angeles
Surveillance footage captured the moment an arsonist started a blaze at a tire store in South Los Angeles. At approximately 5 a.m. on Aug. 2, the suspect arrived at Vermont Tires, a family-owned store located in the 6900 block of Vermont Avenue. Security video captured two men on bicycles throwing an object through a gate and onto a pile of tires, causing a massive fire to erupt.
Devastating Damage and Financial Loss
The fire quickly spread through the walls of the tire shop, destroying over 100 tires, parked cars, and expensive equipment. The flames even reached Brothers Auto Repair Shop next door, causing extensive damage to both businesses. Misael Guevara, an employee at Vermont Tire, estimated the total damage to be around $10,000 to $13,000, not including the cost of the vehicles lost in the fire.
Community Support and Rebuilding Efforts
The owners of Vermont Tire Company, a staple in the community for over 25 years, expressed their devastation at the loss incurred by the fire. Both family businesses were forced to close temporarily, leading to a significant financial strain on the owners. However, they are determined to rebuild and get back on their feet despite the challenges they face. Two GoFundMe pages have been set up to assist in the recovery of the tire and auto body shops.
Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded swiftly to extinguish the flames, preventing further destruction. The incident is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and arson investigators. Security footage captured the face of one of the arsonists, and authorities are seeking information from the public to apprehend the suspects before they strike again.
