BMW Recalls Over 700,000 Vehicles in North America Due to Fire Risk
BMW has announced a recall of 720,796 vehicles in North America after discovering a potential fire hazard related to the electric water pumps in these vehicles. The issue stems from incorrectly installed water pumps, which could short-circuit and lead to a fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlighted that improperly sealed electrical connectors on the water pump may be exposed to water, causing a short circuit.
Issue with Water Pump Installation
The specific problem involves blow-by fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation system collecting on the intake hose and dripping onto the plug connector. This fluid could seep in and cause a power shortage, increasing the risk of a thermal event and, in rare cases, a fire.
Affected BMW Models
The recall affects various BMW models, including the 228I, 328I, 428I, 528I, X1, X3, X4, X5, and Z4, spanning model years from 2012 to 2018. Dealers will replace the water pump and plug and install a guard at no cost to owners. Notification letters will be sent out on October 4.
Previous Recalls by BMW
This marks BMW’s third recall since July. In the earlier recalls, over 290,000 vehicles were affected by faulty bolts that could cause cargo rails to detach, and more than 394,000 vehicles were recalled due to potentially dangerous Takata airbag inflators. Despite receiving around 18 customer complaints about the faulty water pumps, BMW has stated that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this recall.
