Transition Your Social Security Account to Login.gov Now
If you recently received an email from the Social Security Administration, it’s important not to ignore it. The agency has announced that millions of people who created online My Social Security accounts before September 18, 2021, will soon need to switch to Login.gov accounts to continue accessing their information.
Why the Transition is Necessary
The SSA is requiring all users to have a Login.gov or ID.me account to access their Social Security accounts and other online services. More than 5 million account holders have already made the switch, with the goal of streamlining secure login and access to online services. As of June, about 46 million individuals with My Social Security accounts need to transition to Login.gov accounts to continue accessing online services.
Benefits of the Upgrade
This transition is expected to help reduce long wait times for callers to the SSA’s 800 number, which have decreased from 42 minutes in November to 24 minutes in April. A My Social Security account is free and offers personalized tools for managing benefits, estimating future benefits, and requesting replacement Social Security cards. Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley praised the upgrade as a safe and secure way for people to do business with the agency.
How to Make the Switch
The SSA encourages My Social Security account holders to log in and choose to switch to Login.gov. Once accounts are linked, a confirmation screen will appear, and users can access their personal Social Security services and other tools. Existing Login.gov or ID.me account holders do not need to create new accounts or take any other action.
By making this transition now, you can ensure continued access to your Social Security account and online services. Don’t delay in updating your account to Login.gov to stay connected with the benefits and resources you rely on.
