Rescue Efforts for Entangled Humpback Whale Calf off Orange and San Diego Counties
Marine mammal rescue groups are working tirelessly to locate and assist an entangled humpback whale calf that has been spotted in waters off Orange and San Diego counties. The calf appears to be in poor condition, with signs of barnacles and lice covering its body, indicating a lack of deep diving which has led to its deteriorating health.
Search for the Struggling Whale
Efforts to locate the entangled humpback whale calf began after it was first sighted near Redondo Beach and later near Rancho Palos Verdes. Drone footage revealed a rope wrapped around the whale’s tail, with a line running above and below one of the tail fins. Despite its entanglement, the whale was still swimming, using its flippers to propel itself. Captain Steve Burkhalter of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching reported sightings of the whale off Salt Creek Beach and continued the search in the following days, eventually confirming its identity.
Monitoring and Reporting of Whale Sightings
While the humpback whale calf’s current whereabouts are uncertain, boaters and marine enthusiasts in the area are urged to stay vigilant and report any sightings of the struggling whale. It is essential to refrain from approaching or attempting to untie the whale, as this could further endanger its life. Instead, observers are encouraged to stay with the whale, take photos, and document its behavior before contacting the appropriate authorities, such as NOAA’s Whale Entanglement Hotline or the USCG.
By coming together to monitor and assist the entangled humpback whale calf, we can ensure its safety and well-being in the waters off Orange and San Diego counties. Let us all do our part to protect these majestic creatures and preserve their natural habitat for future generations.
