Investigation into Hawarden Fire Damage Caused by Teenagers Playing with Fireworks
On Monday, July 22, the Riverside Fire Department arson investigators were on the scene in Hawarden investigating reports that Sunday’s devastating bush fire that destroyed three houses may have been started by teenagers playing with fireworks.
“It’s under investigation,” said McGinster, a spokesperson for the department, “we are not sure yet.”
Extent of Damage in Hawarden Hills
Hawarden Hills in Riverside, home to about 1,500 residents, suffered extensive damage from the fire. The blaze also damaged at least four other homes, prompting evacuations that have since been lifted as residents return to assess the aftermath.
The residential area, known for its two-story homes and many swimming pools, was engulfed in flames, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Efforts to Contain the Fire and Assessing the Damage
The Riverside Fire Department deployed 21 fire trucks and over 80 firefighters to battle the hot spots and halt the spread of the fire. Despite the challenging weather conditions of hot, dry, and windy, firefighters managed to contain the blaze.
A crew was dispatched to assess the damage caused by the fire which quickly spread up the hill in the Hawarden area. Firefighters requested helicopter support to douse the flames, but the rapid spread of the fire posed challenges in reaching the affected areas in time.
One resident, Noel Piri, recounted the harrowing experience of calling for help as the fire approached his home, only to have firefighters arrive after the house was already ablaze. The urgency of the situation highlighted the need for swift response and effective resource allocation in such emergencies.
Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighters, only immediate and substantial reinforcements could have made a difference in saving homes threatened by the fire. Thankfully, only one firefighter sustained a minor ankle injury, with no civilian casualties reported.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the Riverside community remains vigilant and thankful for the efforts of the brave firefighters who worked tirelessly to protect lives and property.
