Extortion Scheme in Koreatown: Woodland Hills Man Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison

In a shocking case of extortion, a Woodland Hills man has been sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison for terrorizing businesses in Koreatown. Daekun Cho, 39, targeted karaoke bar owners and hostess drivers, resorting to violent attacks to force victims into paying "protection fees."

Violent Extortion Tactics and Assaults

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Cho physically assaulted and threatened his victims, instilling fear to coerce them into paying exorbitant sums of money. The payments, labeled as "protection fees," ranged from $100 to $1,000 per month. Cho’s violent tactics included beating victims with sticks, hijacking vehicles, and even resorting to gunfire to intimidate those who refused to comply.

Impact on Victims and the Community

Cho’s reign of terror had severe consequences for his victims and the community at large. In one instance, a Doumi driver was brutally attacked with baseball bats, resulting in serious injuries. Another victim was shot at while dropping off individuals at a karaoke bar, highlighting the dangerous and ruthless nature of Cho’s criminal activities. The violence and intimidation tactics employed by Cho had a chilling effect on Koreatown merchants, leading some to shut down their businesses and leave California in fear.

Prosecution and Justice Served

Following a thorough investigation and trial, Cho was convicted on multiple federal counts of extortion and carjacking. U.S. District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha handed down a significant prison sentence, reflecting the seriousness of Cho’s crimes. The successful prosecution of Cho sends a strong message that violent extortion schemes will not be tolerated in the community.

In conclusion, the sentencing of Daekun Cho serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding justice and protecting vulnerable members of society from exploitation and violence. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors were crucial in bringing Cho to justice and putting an end to his reign of terror in Koreatown. This case highlights the need for vigilance in combating organized crime and ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members.
