Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Slices
Boar’s Head Provisions is recalling all liverwurst products from store shelves due to possible contamination with listeria, as reported by the U.S. Food and Safety Inspection Service. Health officials are investigating a listeria outbreak that has affected 34 people and resulted in two fatalities across multiple states.
Boar’s Head Recalls Deli Meat Products
In addition to liverwurst, Boar’s Head has also identified potential listeria contamination in some of its deli meat products. The company, based in Sarasota, Florida, is recalling over 103 tons of meat. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them, and retailers have been advised to remove the affected meat from their shelves.
Understanding the Risks of Listeria Contamination
The recalled liver sausage products were manufactured between June 11 and June 17, with a shelf life of 44 days. These products were distributed in retail delis nationwide. Boar’s Head liverwurst is available in plastic-wrapped 3.5-pound loaves and sliced form, labeled as "Boar’s Head Strasbourg Brand Liverwurst."
This listeria outbreak highlights the importance of food safety and the risks associated with consuming contaminated products. Listeria can cause mild symptoms like fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, it can lead to severe infections in vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems.
Taking Precautions and Seeking Assistance
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria can easily spread through deli equipment, surfaces, and food. Refrigeration does not eliminate listeria, but thorough reheating can kill any bacteria present on the meat.
