Wildfire Threatens Homes near Lake Elsinore
A brush fire that erupted on a hillside west of Lake Elsinore quickly spread, burning 130 acres in just one hour and putting homes near the Cleveland National Forest at risk. The blaze, known as the Macy Fire, started near the El Carrizo Campground north of Ortega Highway, west of Macy Street. Multiple firefighting crews from various agencies rushed to the scene as flames advanced dangerously towards residential areas.
Mandatory Evacuations Issued
As the fire continued to grow, evacuation orders were issued for all properties south of Grand Avenue, east of Fairview Street, and west of Ortega. The temporary command center was set up at Lakeside High School to coordinate response efforts. California Highway Patrol and county sheriff’s deputies closed the Ortega Highway in both directions, diverting motorists away from the danger zone. Grand Boulevard in Lake Elsinore was also shut down due to traffic congestion caused by the emergency.
Firefighting Efforts Underway
Despite the challenging conditions, firefighting teams utilized five Cal Fire tankers and three water helicopters to battle the flames. As nightfall approached, crews planned to dig containment lines to halt the fire’s progress. A night-flying helicopter was deployed to provide water support from above, while air tankers and limited helicopters stood ready to assist in extinguishing the blaze. No cause for the fire has been determined yet.
