The Disney Cast Members’ Strike at Disneyland
Cast members at Disneyland have made a resounding statement by voting overwhelmingly to go on strike. Four unions representing 14,000 cast members have delivered a powerful message to Disney about their dissatisfaction with current labor practices.
Reasons for the Strike
Members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) Local 83, SEIU-United Service Workers West, Teamsters Local 395, and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324 have accused Disney of engaging in unfair labor practices. The Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee highlighted issues such as illegal tactics, intimidation, surveillance, and unlawful discipline against union members. These actions have hindered negotiations and the cast members’ ability to secure the contracts they deserve.
The Reality Faced by Disneyland Park Employees
Despite Disneyland’s reputation as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” the Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee shed light on the financial hardships faced by park employees. Shockingly, 64% of cast members are reportedly spending more than half of their monthly salary on rent. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for improved working conditions and fair compensation for all cast members.
The looming strike has not yet been scheduled, but negotiations between union officials and Disney are set to continue on July 22 and July 23. The outcome of these discussions will play a significant role in determining the next steps for both parties involved.
