Wildfire in Lake Elsinore Destroys One Home and Threatens Others
A brush fire broke out on a hillside west of Lake Elsinore near the Cleveland National Forest, spreading quickly to over 130 acres. The fire, named Macy’s Fire, destroyed one home and continued to pose a threat to other properties in the area.
Containment Efforts and Evacuations
Firefighting crews worked tirelessly overnight to contain the Macy’s Fire to 134 acres, achieving 15% containment. Containment refers to the percentage of the fire perimeter that is not expected to expand further due to the efforts of firefighters or natural barriers.
The fire, which started near the El Carrizo campground north of Ortega Highway, spread rapidly and moved downhill at a dangerous rate, impacting homes in federally protected areas. Evacuation orders were issued for properties south of Grand Avenue, east of Fairview Street, and west of Ortega Highway. An evacuation center was set up at Elsinore High School.
Authorities closed the Ortega Highway from Grand Avenue to San Juan Capistrano, as well as a section of Grand Avenue from Machado Street to Maiden Lane. No casualties have been reported due to the fire.
Mutual Aid and Firefighting Efforts
Firefighting resources from Riverside County, Orange County, the U.S. Forest Service, and other agencies have been mobilized to battle the blaze. Firefighters and aircraft have been deployed to contain the fire and protect homes in the area.
Despite challenging conditions, firefighters are working diligently to bring the Macy’s Fire under control and prevent further destruction. The cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation.
