Security Guard Fired for Reckless Driving at Del Amo Fashion Center
A mall security guard at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance has been fired and may have his driver’s license revoked after a video of him driving recklessly in a company car to cheering young people circulated on social media.
It’s unclear exactly when the guard, who is employed by United Universal Security Force and is stationed at the Torrance mall, appeared on the show, but video of the incident was posted to Instagram on Saturday by south.bay.responders .
Incident Details and Response
According to the Instagram account, the incident took place on the roof of a mall parking lot around 11:30 p.m., with the security guard speeding, making donuts, and swerving around other parked cars while blasting Kendrick Lamar “They Don’t Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar. Video of the incident obtained by KTLA shows guards also carrying people during the sideshow, presumably to allow passengers to film video from inside the vehicle during the stunt.
Other parts of the video appear to show another person driving a vehicle up the mall’s steep stairs.
Security Measures and Community Response
This isn’t the first time Torrance Del Amo Fashion Center has been in the news for rowdy teens causing chaos at the mall. In response to previous incidents, the mall’s management has instituted a guardianship policy requiring anyone under the age of 18 to be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21 every Friday and Saturday after 3 p.m. to prevent looting and general disorder.
In light of the recent incident involving the security guard, security advocates and community groups are now calling for stricter background checks and standards for security guards in Southern California.
In response to KTLA’s questions, Allied Universal Security issued a statement, which reads in part: “The conduct in the video is a direct violation of company policy and completely inconsistent with our expectations of team members. As a result, the security professional will be terminated immediately and reported to the California Licensing Agency.”
