Perdue Foods Recalls Frozen Chicken Nuggets and Tenders
Perdue Foods, a well-known poultry producer, is currently in the midst of a major recall of more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders. This decision was made after numerous customers reported finding wires embedded in the products, causing concerns about product safety and quality.
Identification of Affected Products
The recall specifically involves select lots of three distinct products: Perdue Breaded Chicken Breasts, Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, along with Perdue, have determined that approximately 167,171 pounds of these products may have been contaminated by foreign matter, prompting the urgent recall.
Actions Taken and Consumer Guidance
Perdue, based in Maryland, stated that the foreign material was discovered in a limited amount of consumer packaging. Jeff Shaw, Perdue’s senior vice president of food safety and quality, revealed that the material was identified as a fine wire that inadvertently made its way into the manufacturing process. As a precautionary measure, Perdue decided to recall all affected packages to ensure the safety of consumers.
To date, there have been no reports of injuries or adverse reactions resulting from consuming these products. However, the Food Safety and Inspection Service advises consumers to check their refrigerators for any of the recalled products. Identification of the affected items can be done using the product codes provided in notifications from Perdue and the FSIS. These products carry a best-before date of March 23, 2025, and the establishment number “P-33944” on the packaging.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled chicken products are advised to either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. Perdue is offering full refunds to affected consumers and can be contacted at 866-866-3703 for further assistance.
Concerns Over Foreign Material Contamination
Foreign material contamination remains a significant issue in the food industry, leading to numerous recalls across the United States. In a similar incident last November, Tyson Foods recalled nearly 30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets due to the discovery of metal fragments in their products. Apart from metal, other foreign materials such as plastic fragments, rocks, and insect remnants have also been found in packaged goods, prompting swift recalls to mitigate potential risks to consumers.
