Skydiving Tragedy in Perris Valley: Dust Devil Causes Fatal Hard Landing

A tragic incident occurred in Perris Valley, California, when a 28-year-old tandem skydiving instructor and her student lost their lives due to a hard landing caused by a “dust devil.” The pair was flying to Perris Valley Airport when they encountered the dust-filled vortex, leading to a fatal outcome. The community of Skydive Perris is mourning the loss of the beloved instructor, Devrey LaRiccia, who was known for her passion and dedication to the sport of skydiving.

The Accident and Its Aftermath

The accident took place on Friday, August 2, at around 2:30 pm, in a vacant lot on Goetz Road. Witnesses reported that the jump appeared to be normal, with no equipment issues during free fall and parachute deployment. However, as the instructor and her student were preparing to land, they were unexpectedly hit by a dust devil, causing turbulence and leading to a hard landing. Despite being hospitalized with serious injuries, both individuals tragically passed away.

The Impact on the Skydiving Community

The skydiving community is described as small and tight-knit, with the loss of Devrey LaRiccia deeply affecting her colleagues and friends. Known for living life to the fullest and inspiring others with her love for skydiving, Devrey’s passing has left a profound impact on the Skydive Perris community. The identity of the student has not been disclosed out of respect for their family’s privacy.

Understanding Dust Devils and Safety Measures

During summer in flat, open areas with high temperatures, dust devils can form and pose risks to airborne activities like skydiving. While smaller in scale compared to tornadoes, dust devils can still generate powerful winds, creating hazardous conditions for those in the air. As part of skydiving safety protocols, it is essential for instructors and students to be aware of weather conditions and potential risks, taking necessary precautions to ensure a safe landing.

Overall, the skydiving community in Perris Valley is coping with the loss of two individuals who shared a passion for the sport. The memory of Devrey LaRiccia and her dedication to skydiving will live on, reminding others of the importance of safety and unity within the skydiving community.
